In addition to an unforgettable blue sea, the Amalfi Coast boasts a striking yellow sea: the famous "terraces."
Today, there are approximately 400 hectares dedicated to the cultivation of the "sfusato" lemon. Roughly 100,000 tons are harvested every year, without the use of innovative technologies, given the difficulty of access in many areas.
The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) has contributed to the valorization and standardization of this precious citrus fruit, which also plays a role in the hydrogeological protection of the territory.
In terms of numbers, in 2005, there were 280 agricultural enterprises engaged in the cultivation of the "sfusato," with a total area of lemon groves registered at 120 hectares.
In the same year, the certified production of Limone Costa d'Amalfi I.G.P. amounted to 193 tons of fresh lemons.
Among the processed products, "limoncello" stands out as a substantial economic driver for the entire area.
The certified production by Is.Me.Cert. for 2005 was approximately 56,600 bottles.
